Description

A little reward for myself for surviving (and hopefully passing) my first exam. :)
(And yeah, I know I have about a thousand messages to answer. I'm sorry, I'll get to that by the end of the months when my exams are over.)

Aimea was born a illegitimate child to a well-respected high elven archmage, which caused quite a scandal. But even more scandalous to some was the fact that she succeeded in becoming a highly skilled black mage herself and thus winning the favours of all kinds of important people, despite being basically a second-class citizen herself. She and Alrian also used to be lovers, but she left him and disappeared without a trace when she had to flee the country. (That's one of the many reasons he always looks pissed.)

I was thinking of how high elven mage robes look like and this is one thing I came up with. I imagine that archmages in their society wear similar shawls in the color representing the domain of magic they're specialized in. Since Aimea is not an archmage and can never become one due to her social standing, it says a lot about her self-esteem that she wears such a thing in public, I guess. :giggle:

Aimea is my OC. She is from my and :iconstarscreamnemesis:'s original RP.

This is a very lovely piece of art featuring this character. Your shading style is a bit rough, but works very well. The general anatomy of your piece seems very solid and makes the character feel real, while stylized.

I love the way she slightly interacts with her hood, by grasping it and the clothes feel quite nice in general. However, I think that the way that the folds fall is a bit too linear, in the way that the all seem to fall pretty much straight down. By having the folds feel a bit more uneven and curved it might describe your character's form better.

I feel like the weakest point of this image is the character's expression. In general it's tricky to tell a proper story or have the character convey a strong emotion in a piece that's more meant to display a character or her outfit, but the way the character just seems to stare into the distance makes her feel distanced and almost in a trance. Combined with the strong shadows in her face it makes her look a bit unworldly. I'm also left slightly wondering what her right arm is doing; having it hidden behind her body in this position and from this perspective makes it look like she's intentionally trying to hide her arm, rather than her arm being dropped naturally.

I really love how you drew her hair, the way the highlights and shadows overlap slightly to form a texture works amazingly well and it contrasts very nicely with the hood draped over her head. I also really enjoy the slight detailing you did with the black cloth that involves the hood as well. It makes for a nice and simple design that's detailed, but not busy, making for a nice balance. Although the background is very basic, the painterly texture works well for it and it complements the character nicely, while not stealing any attention.

All in all this is a very nice image with just a few slight issues. I hope you found this critique helpful for future improvements!
